New American Center (Lynn)
|
When newly-arrived refugees are settled in the North Shore area, they are referred to the New American Center by their sponsoring affiliate resettlement agency (such as Catholic Charities). The New American Center offers services such as:
- Employment assistance: helps refugees land their first jobs, typically in hospitality, manufacturing, retail merchandising, food processing, transportation, and health care. Job candidates receive English language and vocational skills training, resume development, assistance completing job applications, interview preparation, computer training, and work place orientation. Partner employers include Multicultural Home Care, the Omni Parker Hotel, Traditional Breads Inc., Market Basket, MassTran, and Kayem Foods. See www.rcamlynn.org/employment
- Preventative Health: Refugees tend to demonstrate an especially strong need for medical services, having experienced events that have been extremely detrimental to their overall health. Limited English skills and lack of exposure to U.S. healthcare often prevent refugees from receiving both emergency and preventative medical care. NAC makes sure clients know where to go to obtain appropriate healthcare, conveys the importance of regular checkups and attending scheduled appointments, and contacts medical offices or insurance companies on a client's behalf. NAC works with the Lynn Community Health Center and other local healthcare providers to supply education, support, and translation services. NAC can also provide intensive case management for refugees with serious health-related risks. See http://www.rcamlynn.org/preventative-health
- Youth program: provides English tutoring, after school, summer and mentoring programs for kids grades 1-23 to help them succeed in school and graduate from high school -See www.rcamlynn.org/youthprogram
- Elders program: connects older refugees with mainstream elder services and provides activities to prevent isolation. See www.rcamlynn.org/elders
- Citizenship program: guides immigrants through the naturalization process, including filling out forms and preparing for the USCIS interview so that they can become U.S. citizens. See www.rcamlynn.org/citizens
