Cultural Orientation Sub-Committee
The work of this committee is not easy to define in advance, and it may not all be as mechanical and objective as ATMs. There will be deeply-embedded cultural differences as well. This video, produced by the Cultural Orientation Research Center (a very useful website) suggests some of the issues new immigrants need to understand in order to build themselves a place in American society: http://www.culturalorientation.net/learning/populations/congolese-refugees/congolese-refugees-in-the-united-states-video

Depending on their background, our refugee family may have a lot to learn about how things are done in the United States, from using electric stoves and ATMs to understanding the local transportation system and how to apply for a job.
The sponsoring agency will probably offer some resources, but we will need to have a few patient people who can explain how all sorts of things work. For links to more information on this top, please see our Cultural Orientation Resources page.
